The Fabulous Bungalow Colony on Beach 38th St. – Kodachrome Photos by Murray Cooper

Here is a look back to a time, of life on Beach 38th street.  Murray Cooper’s Kodachrome photographs so capture the feeling of bungalow life (1957-1961), when life did seem so much more simple. Mr. Cooper took many photos of a group of families including his own, so these photos capture a slice summer life at the Bungalows that is gone forever.

The photos are courtesy from the Library of Barbara Cooper.

    1. This was written quite a while ago. I hope you receive this. I remember you and your family and you probably remember my brother Rick, I’m his sister Lois. We lived in 326A in back of the front bungalows. I remember that your sister Marilyn had a daughter. I think her name was Marcie? I was so happy to find this post. It brought back such beautiful memories of carefree summers in Rockaway and all the nice people who also rented. Thanks for the memories, Joan.

      1. Thank you for your memories, You wouldn’t have any photographs of you and your family at the house. .I would love to share them and your families time there.

  2. Great photos! Thanks for sharing. My parents starting coming from The Bronx as children back in 1924.. Then can back in the 50’s with my brother and early 60’s with me.. We lived I think it was 57th st. “Springer Court”. This pictures brought back many memories and I would love to have one of those infamous green wooden rockin chairs!!
    Thanks again,

  3. Thanks for the memories.
loved the jam sessions with all the new friends we made summers in the 50s

  4. Fantastic memories for you. My family had a bungalow on B 88th and I have wonderful memories of those summers. Our bungalows were nothing like yours-no shower indoors or hot water. I love the pretty little cottages that were more like a house than a bungalow. Looks like paradise.

  5. My Dad owned 11 bungalows on the corner of Edgemere ave and B. 38th st in the 1950’s. Where exactly are the ones pictured.

    1. Hello Larry. That is really wild. I hope you have pictures. Go in to my blog and there are photographs of my Grandfathers houses. It was the big brown one on the corner of Spray View Ave and Beach 38th street. It was right on the corner and one house away from the boardwalk. I have some photographs of the street. A few others who were from the block have shared with me their times and stories and photographs. Barbara Copper shared her photographs all about the bungalows near the subway and town. Look forward to hearing from you. When ever you have time, please check out my stories and photos of Beach 38th street.
      Best, Bruce Baumwoll
